Aveiro has a wide selection of hotels, guest houses, and hostels located within the city center and its surrounding areas. Hotels range in price and sophistication depending on your needs. Aveiro is also home to some luxurious resorts that offer guests all the amenities of home.

For those looking for a more unique experience, Aveiro has some stunning boutique and bed & breakfast options. These are ideal for travelers who want to explore Aveiro in a local and intimate setting. Aveiro also has camping sites within the city that offer great value for money.

We stayed at an apartment “The lodge in Blue” right in the center, the location was amazing, and the apartment itself was very nice and had everything we needed, it has 5 bedrooms, it does have stairs if you are traveling with kids. You can also park your car (if you are driving) along the canal which is about a 5-minute walk to the apartment. The host of the Apartment was a lovely lady and very helpful. Be sure to consider the “Lodge in Blue” for your accommodation, you can walk to everything.

Getting to Aveiro

Aveiro is easily accessible via bus, train, or car. The closest airport to Aveiro is Porto Airport (OPO), which is approximately 85km away. You can drive your own vehicle if you are renting one in Portugal. Getting to Aveiro by car is an easy and convenient option.

Aveiro is located in the center of Portugal and can be accessed via the A1 highway which connects Aveiro with other major cities in Portugal such as Porto, Lisbon, and Coimbra. Driving to Aveiro from Porto takes about 1 hour and takes around 2.5 hours from Lisbon, keep in mind these are toll roads.

We had a car in Portugal so it made it much easier to explore Aveiro in our own time and at our own pace.

The train is also a popular way to get to Aveiro from cities such as Porto and Lisbon. Aveiro has its own train station which offers regular connections to both of these cities. Aveiro can also be reached by the regional train service Aveiro-São João da Madeira or Aveiro-Coimbra, making it easy and convenient to explore the surrounding area.

How to pay tolls in Portugal

Driving in Aveiro requires visitors to understand Portugal’s toll system. Tolls can be paid in cash (at the time of passing through) or by using an electronic toll tag device. The electronic toll tag is called Via Verde and is convenient for those who will use highways frequently during their visit.

It can be purchased at all Via Verde outlets, at post offices, or online. Drivers will need to register the device with their vehicle information and then add credit to it. Once registered, you can use the device at any of Portugal’s toll plazas.

The best time to visit Aveiro is from April to September. During this period, Aveiro offers the very best in terms of weather, sightseeing opportunities, and activities. Aveiro experiences mild temperatures during these months with an average temperature ranging between 14°C and 27°C.

Aveiro has a subtropical climate which means it has hot and humid summers and mild winters. This makes Aveiro the perfect destination for both summer and winter holidays.

During the summer months, Aveiro’s beaches are incredibly popular with locals and visitors alike. Aveiro is also home to some stunning parks and gardens where you can take a relaxing stroll or enjoy a picnic in the sunshine.

Is Aveiro expensive to visit

Aveiro is an affordable destination for travelers, with a variety of accommodation options to suit all budgets it is generally less expensive than other cities in Portugal such as Lisbon and Porto but it still offers plenty of great amenities and activities at reasonable prices.

Food and drinks tend to be more expensive in Aveiro’s restaurants than those in other cities, however, Aveiro has some great local eateries that offer delicious meals at very reasonable prices. Aveiro also offers a range of public transportation options, making it easy and inexpensive to get around and in Aveiro city center itself you can honestly just walk around and explore the city’s sights and attractions, saving you a ton.

Hot tip: Throughout Portugal during lunch hours, if you keep an eye out for the “meal of the day” you will be able to enjoy a delicious and traditional meal at good prices, a “meal of the day” normally consists of bread, meal, drink (alcohol or non-alcohol) and coffee, sometimes it can include soup also, all for around €7-10 euros. Each cafe or restaurant offers different meals of the day, so keep an eye out, this will save you a lot of money, meal of the day is generally on offer from 12 noon to around 230pm.

Somedays we would have our breakfast at our accommodation and then have a “meal of the day” as they are always quite big meals and then something lite for dinner or we cooked at our accommodation, keeping costs down.

Costa Nova Beach

Costa Nova Beach is one of Aveiro’s most stunning beaches, known for its spectacular golden sand and sparkling blue waters. Located to the west of Aveiro, Costa Nova Beach offers a variety of activities and attractions to enjoy such as sunbathing, swimming in the ocean, or taking a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk. You can also take part in some exciting water sports activities such as stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and surfing.

Costa Nova Beach is also famous for its unique striped houses which line the beach. The colorful buildings have become Aveiro’s signature, with their bright and cheerful colors adding a unique charm to Aveiro’s coastline.

These iconic buildings are considered to be Aveiro’s most emblematic attraction, and make for great photo opportunities. The colorful striped houses were originally used as storage for Aveiro’s fishermen.

The bright colors were chosen to help the fishermen easily find their homes after a day out at sea. Nowadays, many of Aveiro’s striped houses have been converted into vacation homes or restaurants, making them great places to relax and enjoy Aveiro.

Take a Canal Cruise

Aveiro is known as “the Venice of Portugal” because of its many canals that offer visitors the opportunity to see Aveiro’s unique sights from a different perspective. Take a canal cruise to explore Aveiro’s canals and admire the beautiful buildings, churches, and bridges along the way. Cruise under the iconic Ponte Laços de Amizade, Aveiro’s most beloved bridge.

We did our canal cruise with “Aveiro Moments” which cost around 32 euros for a family of 4. We loved our cruise guide, she was fun and so happy and provided lots of knowledge on Aveiro and the kids loved her.

Admire the Old train station

Aveiro’s old train station was originally built in 1864 and is steeped in historical significance. The azulejos-tiles are impressive. Aveiro’s old train station is a must-see sight. This Art Nouveau building is an architectural masterpiece and a perfect example of Aveiro’s unique charm.

Relax at Aveiro Beach

Aveiro Beach is Aveiro’s main beach and a great place to relax and enjoy Aveiro’s beautiful coastline and take in the stunning views of the iconic lagoon. Enjoy activities such as sunbathing, swimming, water sports or simply taking a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk.

Aveiro Beach has plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars nearby, so you can easily find some delicious food or drinks after a day of sunbathing or swimming.

Visit the Historical sites around Aveiro

Visit one of the many historical sites such as Aveiro Cathedral, Castle of São João da Madeira, or Church of Santa Maria da Feira to learn more about Aveiro’s past. Climb the stairs to the top of Farol de Aveiro for incredible views of Aveiro’s coastline, Aveiro’s lagoon, and Aveiro city itself. The lighthouse is the tallest in Portugal, It stands 62 meters tall and 66 above sea level and it is still currently fully operational since 1893.

The lighthouse is open every Wednesday, hours differ in winter and summer, but there is 3 scheduled times that you can go inside and climb the 288 steps to the top.

Visit the Aveiro Salt Pans

Found on the south end of Aveiro, it is an open lagoon filled with seawater that is used to extract salt from the water. The Aveiro Salt Pans are one of Portugal’s most important salt production sites and have been in operation since the 13th century.

Explore Aveiro’s salt industry on a guided tour, or take a boat ride to see the Aveiro Salt Pans up close. See the traditional methods and tools used past and present by Aveiro’s salt producers to harvest the salt.

Wander around Aveiro Old Town

Indulge in local sweets such as ovos moles (egg yolks and sugar) or amêndoa laminada (almond cakes). Enjoy a traditional dish such as caldeirada de enguias (Eel stew), but no visit to Aveiro is complete without trying the Ovos Moles, we tried a sample of different flavors from a beautiful bakery across from where we boarded our Moliceiros tour, so keep an eye out.

A great place to shop for souvenirs and unique finds. Aveiro has numerous shops that line Aveiro’s canals, selling everything from traditional Portuguese pottery to Aveiro’s famous Ovos Moles (egg yolk sweets). Aveiro is also home to Rua de Santa Joana, a large shopping street with plenty of shops and boutiques that you can explore. Aveiro’s souvenir shops are filled with unique items ranging from handmade jewelry to Portugal-themed t-shirts.

Visit the Ponte Laços de Amizade (Bridge of Friendship)

Visit Aveiro’s most iconic bridge, the Ponte Laços de Amizade (Bridge of Friendship). You will find this bridge just outside the Forum shopping center. This beautiful bridge is one of Aveiro’s most photographed landmarks and a symbol of Aveiro’s deep bond with its sister city, Aveiro. The bridge is decorated with handmade ceramic tiles that represent Aveiro’s friendship and connection to Aveiro.

The Ponte Laços de Amizade (Bridge of Friendship) is also known for its colorful ribbons. Colorful ribbons are tied to the bridge as a symbol of love or friendship.

Visitors often tie colorful ribbons in Aveiro’s vibrant colors, red, blue, and yellow. The red ribbon symbolizes Aveiro’s strong will, courage, and passion, the blue ribbon stands for Aveiro’s deep connection to its sister city Aveiro, and the yellow ribbon represents Aveiro’s bright spirit and energy.

You can tie their own ribbon to Aveiro’s Ponte Laços de Amizade (Bridge of Friendship) as a symbol of Aveiro’s love or friendship. You should write your name and the date they visited Aveiro or the date your partnership started on the ribbon before tying it to the bridge.

The colorful ribbons are also believed to bring good luck and fortune, so make sure you tie one on the bridge during your visit!

Visit the Ponte dos Carcavelos (Carcavelos Bridge)

This magnificent bridge spans the Canal de São Roque – stretching between Beira Mar’s old fishermen’s district to its iconic salt flats. Built-in 1953 after an earlier structure collapsed in 1942.

You will find beautiful arches adorned with Aveiro’s silver eagle symbol on its green coat of arms. You can enjoy the beauty of this bridge by walking or during a cruise on a traditional Moliceiros and get the history told by your guide.

Shop at the Forum Shopping Centre

The Forum Aveiro Shopping Centre is a must-visit destination for shopaholics. Located in Aveiro’s historic center, it offers visitors a wide array of shops and boutiques to explore. Shoppers will find major retailers such as Zara, Mango, and Bershka, as well as local Aveiro brands. Don’t forget to explore Aveiro’s beauty shops for Portuguese-made cosmetics, skincare products, and fragrances.

Forum Aveiro Shopping Centre you will find plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, and even an ice cream parlor! Besides these, the Forum Aveiro Shopping Centre also offers events and activities such as movie screenings, live performances, and more to keep visitors entertained all year round.

The open-air shopping center has ribbons hanging from the ceiling as you find outside of the center on the Ponte Laços de Amizade making it a very photogenic spot, you can even head up onto the roof and be surrounded by plants, trees, and chairs to take in the views of Aveiro.

We spent 3 months in Portugal, we did a solid 3 week’s trip around Portugal starting in Porto and our second stop was in Aveiro, there are so many great places to explore in Portugal, given Portugal is quite a small country it is very possible to fit many destinations in within a short period of time, especially compared to my home country Australia which is far too big to squeeze a lot in, in a short time. in Less then 3 hours if you are driving you can visit the beautiful towns of Fatima, Batalha, and Nazaré as you head down South, or head North to Porto, Braga, and the must-see Geres National Park.

Nazaré is a beautiful Portuguese town located in the district of Leiria, along the Atlantic Coast. It’s renowned for its stunning beaches, delicious seafood cuisine, and vibrant culture. Getting to Nazaré

Getting to Nazaré is relatively easy. The most convenient way to get there from Lisbon is to take a bus or train from the capital city, which takes around an hour and a half.

You can also rent a car if you want more flexibility in your travels. If you are traveling to Nazaré from Porto it will take you around 2 hours.

Once in Nazaré, you can explore the town on foot, or take one of the many buses that run through the city.

The best time to visit Nazaré, Portugal

The best time to visit Nazaré is usually in the summer months of June, July, and August. During these months, temperatures are mild but can become quite hot and the city is filled with tourists eager to explore its beauty. The beaches also come alive during this season, as people flock from all over Portugal to soak up some sun on the golden sands.

The town is also alive with festivals and street parties during these months, so you’re sure to have a great time.

If you prefer cooler weather, spring (March-April-May) or autumn (September-October-November) are ideal times for a visit.

Is Nazaré expensive to visit

Nazaré is an affordable destination for visitors, with prices being lower than in other parts of Portugal. Accommodation tends to be the most expensive part of a trip to Nazaré, but there are plenty of budget-friendly options that won’t break the bank, like where we stayed at “Casa Lúcia” we found very affordable at the time.

Eating out is also relatively inexpensive, with plenty of delicious seafood restaurants serving up traditional Portuguese cuisine. You should also keep an eye out for the many local markets and food stalls offering tasty snacks at great prices. Overall, Nazaré is a great destination if you’re looking for an affordable vacation in Portugal.

Praia da Nazaré (Nazaré Beach)

The picturesque Praia da Nazaré provides some of the best views in town. It is the ideal spot to watch the sunset and take pictures of the stunning landscape. The beach also offers plenty of activities such as kayaking, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Walk along the promenade and enjoy the views of the cobblestone streets, and vibrant buildings, get some souvenir shopping done, enjoy many of the restaurants, and walk to the end of the promenade where you can hop on the Funicular to panoramic views over Nazaré.

During our time in Nazaré (the month of July- Summer), we were lucky to enjoy the Euro beach soccer league 2022, we watched Germany Vs Spain, which draws crowds from all over Europe.

Sun-dried fish along the beach

Another interesting activity to experience while visiting Nazaré is seeing the sun-dried fish along the beach. This centuries-old tradition has been kept alive and is a unique way to preserve the fresh catches from off of the shore.

The practice involves hanging strips of cod and other types of fish on wooden frames that are placed near the beach. The fish is left to dry in the sun and wind, giving it a salty flavor that’s popular among locals. Seeing this process is a great way to experience the old-world charm of Nazaré.

The traditional Boats along the promenade

The Traditional Boats on view in this open-air exhibit in Nazaré is a great place to learn about the region’s maritime history and culture. Located along the beachfront promenade, it features boats from different eras and showcases how traditional fishing vessels were used throughout the centuries.

Visitors can also learn about the tools used by fishermen and explore interactive exhibits. It’s a great spot to visit if you’re interested in learning more about the region and its rich fishing tradition. After exploring the museum.

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby as well, so you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink while taking in the stunning views of the nearby harbor.

Ride the Nazaré Funicular

The Nazaré Funicular operates daily from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. It’s a great way to get up and down the steep cliffsides of Miradouro do Suberco, providing breathtaking views of Praia do Norte Beach, Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo (Fort St. Michael), and the Atlantic Ocean along the way.

Tickets cost around €2 for adults and €1 for children. The ride takes just 4 minutes, making it one of the quickest ways to get up and down the cliffside. So if you’re looking for a fast and affordable way to see the stunning views from Miradouro do Suberco, hop on board the Nazaré Funicular!

Explore the backstreets of the old town

Take a stroll through the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town and discover a different side to Nazaré. Here you can find some of the oldest buildings in the area, as well as traditional shops and cafes.

Indulge in fresh seafood

No trip to Nazaré would be complete without indulging in some of the delicious local seafood. You’ll find a variety of delicious dishes, from cod and shrimp to clams and oysters.

We had dinner at a place called Maria do Mar, located on a side street just off the main boulevard close to the Funicular, we indulged in a couple of different meals, Calderada de peixe (seafood/fish stew), espetada (seafood or meat skewer).

My husband was craving caracois (snails), he found a nice little restaurant Maria Matos Mariscos and enjoyed a cold cerveja (beer) and caracois. I have tried snails before, but this time I could not bring myself to do it.

Miradouro do Suberco

For an even more spectacular view, head to the Miradouro do Suberco viewpoint. This incredible spot is located at the top of a cliff and offers some of the most breathtaking views of Nazaré’s coastline.

To get there, you can take a Nazaré Funicular (cable car) from the beachfront promenade or climb up the steep staircase. Either way, it’s well worth the effort as you can enjoy sweeping views of Praia do Norte Beach and the Atlantic Ocean at the top, you will also find cafes, bars, and plenty of souvenirs too.

Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo

Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo is another great place to explore in Nazaré. This 16th-century fortress was built to defend the town against pirates and other intruders.

It’s now a popular tourist attraction, where visitors can learn about its history and admire the stunning ocean views from its towers.

Here is a great spot to check out where the big waves happen, be warned in advance its a hill, going down to the Forte is ok, and coming back up can be a workout in itself, there are also tuk-tuks going from the top of Norte beach and down at the Forte, so you can jump on them for a cost.

Farol Da Nazaré

The Farol Da Nazaré is one of the most iconic sights in the town. This 18th-century red lighthouse stands an impressive 11 meters tall and offers spectacular views of the coastline from its vantage point on the cliffs.

It’s also a great spot to watch the sunset, as you can admire stunning shades of pink and orange as the sun goes down over the horizon. The lighthouse is open to visitors, and can be found during your visit to the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, a great place also to watch in awe of the massive waves of Nazaré.

Visit Praia do Norte Beach

One of the best things to do in Nazare is to visit the iconic Praia do Norte beach. This stunning stretch of golden sand is backed by dramatic cliffs and offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also a popular spot for surfing, so be sure to bring your board!

Nazaré is famous for its big waves and holds the world record and it’s one of the best places in Europe to watch them. Every year, a giant swell known as “the Wave of Nazaré” appears and can reach up to 30 meters high or more! It’s an amazing sight to behold and makes for a unique experience.

Hike Monte De São Bartolomeu

If you want to escape the beach and get into nature – Monte De São Bartolomeu is a great spot for nature lovers, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding region.

The peak of the mountain stands at 517 meters and provides stunning panoramic views from its lookout point. It’s also home to some unique vegetation, such as rare orchids and fragrant wildflowers. During the summer months, there are guided hikes available to explore the mountain and its trails.

Alternatively, you can take a leisurely stroll and admire the views from a variety of vantage points, it can take between 15-20 minutes each way, mainly with stairs going up.

São Martinho do Porto

São Martinho do Porto is a beautiful town located in the municipality of Nazaré, Portugal. This quaint fishing village has a stunning beachfront with views of the Atlantic Ocean and plenty of things to do. Visitors can enjoy long walks along the sandy shoreline or take part in activities like swimming, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and jet skiing.

Getting to Óbidos is easy and convenient. The town is located approx 85 kilometers north of Lisbon, just off the A8 motorway. Visitors can also take a bus from Lisbon’s city center, which will take approximately an hour and a half to reach.

You can also take a train, but it will take longer. If you are traveling from Porto, it will take about two and a half hours, approx 240km.

The best time to visit Óbidos, Portugal

The best time to visit Óbidos is during the spring and autumn months, from March to May and September to October. During these periods, visitors can enjoy the vibrant blooms of spring, as well as mild temperatures and fewer crowds. The summer months can be hot and dry, while November through February can be cold, wet, and windy.

Keep in mind June through August is considered peak season, which can make it more crowded and more expensive, I would recommend booking accommodation in advance if you are considering staying in Óbidos.

We visited Óbidos in the first week of July, and we found it to be quite pleasant, although you want to get there in the morning to avoid the crowds and the day getting hot, especially walking along the castle walls, be sure to have a hat, there is no shade along the walls.

Is Óbidos expensive to visit

Óbidos is generally quite affordable, to explore Castelo de Óbidos entry is free, with meals, drinks, and accommodation all being reasonably priced, again depending on the month you are visiting, Summer seems to be more expensive.

Eating out can be inexpensive compared to other European cities, especially if you stick to traditional Portuguese cuisine. For example, dishes such as salt cod casserole (bacalhau com natas) or a delicious grilled sardine sandwich (sardinha assada na brasa) can be found for as little as €5.

Try the famous Ginja Liqueur

Ginja liqueur is a popular local specialty of Óbidos, Portugal. It is made from ginjinha, a small red sour cherry native to the region. The cherries are soaked in alcohol and sweetened with sugar to make this delicious fortified wine liqueur. Ginja can be enjoyed neat or mixed into cocktails and other drinks.

Visitors to Óbidos should be sure to sample a glass of this local liqueur – it’s one of the best things about visiting the area! Ginja has a sweet but slightly tart taste, with notes of cherries and spice.

It is often served in a small shot glass or in chocolate cups. Ginja Liqueur is incredibly popular in Óbidos, and it’s easy to find in many stores along Rua Direita and only costs about 1 euro for a shot. During our visit, we tried the traditional Ginja Liqueur and also a chocolate-flavored ginja liqueur, so yummy and we got to keep the shot glass as a souvenir.

Aqueduto de Óbidos

The Aqueduto da Água de Prata is a remarkable 16th-century aqueduct, which runs along the western edge of Óbidos. The Aqueduto de Óbidos was built around 1570 by Queen Catherine of Austria, wife of King John III, and is approx 3km long. Although it was designed as a water supply system for the city, today it also serves as an attraction in its own right thanks to its stunning architecture and unique design.

It is possible to explore the aqueduct on foot, either by taking a guided tour or simply strolling along its length. You can find the Aquaduto as you exit out of the Porta da Vila (Town gate) to your left, walk down and you will also find some public restrooms. The Aquaduto is opposite the toilet block.

Museu Municipal de Óbidos

Museu Municipal de Óbidos is a great place to learn about the town’s history and culture. This museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including pottery, paintings, and sculptures from different eras. It also contains documents, photographs, and other items related to the town’s past. There is even a traditional kitchen with period furniture and utensils. The museum offers guided tours as well as audio-visual presentations about the local area. It is open all year round and admission is free of charge.

Admire the Igreja de Santa Maria (Church of Santa Maria)

Igreja de Santa Maria is the town’s main church and one of its most prominent landmarks. Built-in the 12th century, this Gothic-style building has a stunning façade with intricate details and delicate sculptures. Inside, visitors can admire the beautiful stained glass windows that adorn the walls and ceilings. There is also an impressive golden altarpiece depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. This lagoon is also home to many different species of birds and wildlife. Where the lagoons meet the Atlantic ocean you will find Praia de Foz do Arelho (beach) which is a short drive from Óbidos.

Events in Óbidos

Depending on the time of year you are visiting Óbidos, Óbidos holds many events such as the ChocoFesta, Vila Natal, Carnival of Óbidos and the ‘Medieval market’, and many more festivals throughout the year.

Medieval market

The Medieval Market in Óbidos is held annually during the summer months, usually from mid-July to early August, during this time, the city center is transformed into a replica of medieval times and filled with merchants selling traditional goods and food.

Visitors can wander down cobblestone streets and explore historic monuments while sampling local cuisine and listening to live music. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and culture of Óbidos.

The Medieval market does charge an admission fee which is around €10 for adults, and €5 for kids 4-11 years, but it is worth it to experience the unique atmosphere and vibrant culture of this wonderful town.

ChocoFesta (Chocolate festival)

The Chocofesta is another annual event that takes place in Óbidos generally during the month of April-May. This two-week festival celebrates the town’s rich chocolate heritage and is a great way to experience local culture and hospitality. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, such as chocolate tasting, workshops about traditional recipes and techniques, music performances, dancing, and traditional costumes.

There are also stalls selling handmade chocolate products such as truffles, pralines, and other treats. The Chocofesta is a great way to experience the unique culture of Óbidos and sample some of its delicious local produce. Admission is around €10 for adults and €8 for kids, these prices can change.

Vila Natal de Óbidos

Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the town and take in the stunning views from the top of its ancient walls. There are also plenty of wineries in the area that offer tours, tastings, and even cooking classes. If you’re looking for a little more adventure, there are some great hiking trails near town that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Best time to visit Valencia

The best time to visit Valencia is in the spring or fall, as the weather is mild and there are fewer crowds. However, the city is lovely in the summer as well, when the weather is warm and sunny.

The beaches are definitely a major draw in the summer months, but be aware that it can be quite hot and much more crowded. If you’re visiting in the summer, make sure to pack light, airy clothing and plenty of sunscreen.

Valencia is a great city to visit year-round, but spring and fall are definitely the best times to go. We visited in September and the weather was beautiful, it was very pleasant but yet still had some hot days, we had one day of rain and the rest we could have honestly spent every day at the beach the weather was so good, without the summer crowds.

Getting to Valencia

To get to Valencia, you can fly to the city’s airport, which is located around 11km outside of the city center, you can find some budget flights here with Skyscanner. You can also take a train or bus from other major Spanish cities such as Madrid or Barcelona. Trains run frequently from Madrid and take as little as 1.5hours or if traveling from Barcelona allows for a 3-hour journey.

Getting around Valencia

Valencia is easily explored on foot, as most of the attractions are located in the city center. However, there is also an excellent public transportation system that can be used to get around.

The city has a metro system, as well as buses and trams. The Metro system is easy to navigate, so you shouldn’t get overwhelmed. Trams are a great way to get to the beaches, the kids will love riding the tram, which is a great way to see some of the city’s sights. A ride on the metro is also a great option for getting around, as it is quick and efficient. As mentioned the city is easily seen by foot, but renting a bike is another option and the city is well equipped for cyclists, you can hire bikes from where they have stations throughout the city.

There are a number of hotels located in the city center, which is convenient for exploring all of the sights. What to pack for a trip to Valencia

When packing for a trip to Valencia, be sure to pack comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking. It is also a good idea to pack light clothing, as the weather is usually warm, be sure to take a light jacket for some of the cooler nights.

Here is a suggested 10-day itinerary for an amazing trip to Valencia with kids.

On Day 1 of your trip to Valencia, start your adventure at the City of Arts and Sciences. This massive complex is one of Valencia’s most popular tourist attractions, and it is easy to see why. The Hemispheric is an interactive museum that offers a unique experience for all ages. The underwater tunnels at the Oceanografic are a must-see, and the IMAX cinema offers some of the best 3D movies around.

If you are visiting in summer be sure to have some fun in the water walking balls and small boats or bodyboards they have for hire for a small fee, the kids had a heap of fun running in the water balls, my husband and daughter tried out the little boats, while our son tried the boards.

Tip: best to be wearing flip-flops (or have a spare pair of shoes) in case you fall in, Riley fell into the water and had very wet shoes, but was a load of fun and laughs.

Day 2

Spend the day at the beach. Valencia is home to some of the best beaches on the Mediterranean coast, and you’re sure to find one that suits your needs. Whether you want to relax in the sun or try your hand at some water sports, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to enjoy a refreshing drink and some delicious food while you’re there. Be sure to keep your belongings safe if you are going to go swimming.

Day 3

Visit Mercado Central, Valencia’s famous market. This is the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs for your friends and family back home. You’ll also find plenty of fresh produce, so be sure to stock up on snacks for the days ahead. You will be in ore of all the seafood on hand, be sure to try some, we ate some oysters during our visit and they were so fresh and delicious. After your bellies are full take some time to stroll around the streets of the city center, there are some unique stores to be found.

Day 4

If you like shopping, Valencia has some nice shopping centers not too far from the City of Science, a short walk (about 10min) you will find CC Saler, I did quite a bit of clothes shopping here at the store C&A and they have many well-known brands stores like H&M, Zara and many more and here you can too find a major supermarket Carrefour.

Another short (15min) from the city of Science you will find the Aqua Multiespacio shopping center, here you will find some great restaurants to eat in, and it even has a cinema if you want to catch a movie in Spanish, this center is much smaller then CC Saler, but they do have a Lego center which will sure bit a hit for the kids.

Day 5

Go on a day trip to Xativa. This beautiful town is located just a short drive from Valencia, and it makes for a great day trip. Wander through the narrow streets, stopping to admire the architecture and check out the shops along the way. Be sure to visit the castle for some stunning views of the town and surrounding countryside.

Day 6

Explore some of Valencia’s best museums. The Museum of Fine Arts and the National Archaeological Museum are both definitely worth a visit. If you’re looking for something a little different, the Museum of Chocolate is also a lot of fun and sure one the kids would enjoy, the Chocolate Museum is however about a 30-minute drive from the center of Valencia.

Day 7

Take a walk through Parque de Cabecera. This large park is perfect to spend the day strolling around, enjoying a picnic or some lunch with surrounding cafes, it’s also home to a number of attractions, including an aviary and a botanical garden, and a not to miss visit to the Bioparc Valencia. This unique zoo is home to a number of endangered species, and it’s a great place to learn about conservation. The kids will also love getting up close to the animals.

Day 8

Get back into the center to see Two of the city’s most iconic landmarks. La Lonja de la Seda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Spain. The building was once used as a silk exchange, and it’s now home to a museum. The museum is interesting, but even if you don’t go inside, the exterior of the building is definitely worth a look.

Visit the Plaza de la Virgen. This square is home to the stunning Valencia Cathedral, as well as a number of other historical buildings. Spend some time walking around and admiring the architecture, and make your way to the top of the Cathedral of Valencia for sweeping views of the city.

Dating back to the 13th century, this Gothic building is one of the most iconic landmarks in Valencia. The exterior is impressive, but the real highlight is the interior, with its beautiful stained glass windows and intricate carvings. Be sure to take the elevator to the top of the cathedral for stunning views of Valencia. Then stop for a bite to eat at one of the many cafes or restaurants that surround the square.

Day 9

Spend some time strolling through one of Spain’s largest parks The Turia Gardens – the former riverbed passes by the city’s main attractions and it’s a great place to spend a day with the kids with over 9 kilometers of green space, escape the hustle and bustle of the city and unwind. A great place to rent a bike and cycle along the many paths, the gardens are perfect for a morning walk or an afternoon picnic. Kids will love exploring the many bridges and playgrounds along the way.

Be sure to stop in at Gullivers Park for some fun your kids will no doubt be ready to let off some steam. A short walk from the city of Arts through the Turia Gardens you will be met with the unique Gullivers Park, where they can run around and play to their heart’s content. There are also a number of rides suitable for younger children, making it the perfect place to finish off your day.

Day 10

End your trip by relaxing and taking it easy, stroll through the beautiful parks again, the parks are well worth a second visit, pure tranquility, and finish off with a visit to one of Valencia’s many amazing restaurants for a delicious meal. Buen provecho!

There are a few different ways to get around Oxford, depending on what you’re looking for. If you want to see the sights, then the best way is to walk, Oxford is an easy city to explore on foot or you can take the bus. If you’re looking to get around quickly, then the best option is by bus.

The bus service in Oxford is really good, and it’s the cheapest way to get around other than walking of course.

There are a few different routes, so you can easily find one that goes near where you’re going. If you’re not sure which bus to take, there are maps at the bus stop that will show you the route.
