1. La Sagrada Familia

La Sagrada Familia is a stunning sight to be seen, be in awe of the stunning architecture and vision of Gaudi’s masterpiece, you can choose to climb (or take the elevator) up to some of the towers and be stunned with breathtaking views of Barcelona.

Although still a working masterpiece, you can book a guided tour through the completed parts of the basilica and museum and learn about the history of the La Sagrada Familia or explore at your own pace if you are thinking of buying a ticket for a guided tour/audio tour.

I suggest pre-purchasing your tickets online to avoid disappointment. Tickets start from about €25+ depending on your choice of tour, and kids are free.

La Sagrada Familia began construction in 1882 and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. In 2010 it was declared by Pope Benedict XVI a basilica, it is believed the construction may be completed by the year 2026.

La Sagrada Familia is the final resting place of Antoni Gaudí; he died in 1926 after being struck by a tram. You can view Antoni’s gravestone in the chapel that is dedicated to our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Getting Around When in Barcelona

To take in all that Barcelona has to offer it’s best to purchase a City Pass; they are more economical and allow you to get around in no time. Make sure you get a city pass that offers unlimited uses, allowing you to skip the long lines and go for a direct entry. A hassle-free solution that gets you into Sagrada Familia, Picasso Museum, MNAC, and other attractions for free; additionally, some added perks may include a 1-Day hop-on-off sightseeing bus ticket, travel discounts, or a complimentary travel brochure. You can get your tickets here.

Place to sleep

Barcelona has an abundance of accommodation; during my time, I stayed at the Sun and Moon Hostel in the Gothic area; it was a great location within walking distance to Barceloneta beach, metro station, and La Rambla. You can book your next hostel stay here or book one of the many hotels around the city here.

Losing Yourself in The Gothic Quarter

Located in the heart of Barcelona is Ciutat Vella, an old town that has been preserved to take you back in time. Barri Gotic is one of the most mesmerizing places, as you walk down the narrow streets you can take in the charming and secluded plazas, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a quick bite in one of the many cafes, drop in to check out one of the local boutiques and most importantly take in the staggering historic buildings. Some of these buildings date back to Roman times, allowing you to imagine the world back then.

Best when explored on foot, a place where you can easily spend a few hours. Soaking in the experiences as you admire everything from arched alleyways to medieval architecture.

Soak Some Sun on The Beach

One of the reasons why Barcelona is considered a gem is due to its location! Sitting perfectly along the Mediterranean sea, you can enjoy a 4.5km long sunny, sandy, and stunning coastline, a perfect resting place when you are done uncovering the city for the day. However, even around the coastline, you will find endless galleries, museums, and boutiques. Each one offers you something different and charming to enjoy.

Barcelona is a learning experience, and you must absorb the information like a sponge. It calls for a relaxing few hours at the beach! Here you can soak up the sun, enjoy the cool breeze and get in touch with the Barcelona beach vibe. From bars to lounges, to water activities, you can have it all! Once you are done, you can dust yourself off and walk back into the city center in a matter of minutes.

Taking in Barcelona From the Top

One of the best places to appreciate Barcelona’s architecture and geography is from the top, there are tourist spots that offer you a complete view of the city and from many different angles, allowing you to take in all that the city has to offer from an urban landscape to its magical natural surroundings.

A 10-minute cable cart ride from Montjuic Park takes you to the castle on the hill. A smooth ride that glides over Barcelona, offering you a stunning view of everything around you. While the real fun begins when you reach the 512 meters (above sea level) vantage point, you can see everything from the surrounding coastline to a tiny glimpse of Ibiza and Mallorca (on a clear day).

Another great vantage point is from the tower of Sagrada Familia, Les Arenes terraces, La Pedrera’s rooftop, and the Palau National (overlooking the magic fountain of grandiose Plaça d’Espanya. Another breathtakingly beautiful view is from the Terrace of Park Guell.

If you are in the mood to party then you will find endless rooftop bars and pools that offer you a panoramic view of the city as you snack on something fabulous, with a drink of your choice!

Getting Around on a Cycle

One of the best ways to get around Barcelona is on a cycle. With more than 200 km of designated cycle lanes and free-cycle service, you will find it hard to keep your feet on the ground. This bike-friendly city encourages locals and tourists to bike around when exploring the city. It is faster than walking around and still allows you to take in all that the city has to offer.

You can explore Barcelona with a 3.5-hour bike tour by pedaling or if like me, not so fit, the bikes are electric for them uphill climbs, explore places like Montjuic Hill, Port Vell, El Raval, Gothic Quarter, and more. Bike tours start from €39 and you can book them with Viator.

Neighbourhood Hopping When in Barcelona

When looking to explore the Catalan culture, we suggest you discover the different faces of Barcelona. One of the most famous independent villages here is Gracia a cool barrio where you can find bohemian-inspired enclaves, lively plazas, small cobblestoned lanes, and a place where locals gather to chit chat over some coffee. From dawn to dusk, the area is bustling with locals and those looking to see a view of Barcelona.

Ciutat Vella is one of Barcelona’s most creative and captivating neighborhoods. Where you will find endless independent galleries, world-class museums, and artist workshops, when you head to El Born you will find ancient churches standing tall alongside Michelin-star restaurants. Walking around the maze-like streets you get a sense of the importance of architecture in Barcelona.

Walking Down Las Ramblas

Once you have visited the most important points you wanted to experience, we suggest you go around on a walking tour. Pick Las Ramblas as your starting point, and you may walk towards the mountains or the beach. Both experiences offer something a little more different. While walking towards the beach will help you take in all the local hype, walking towards the mountain range will give you a view of how Barcelona offers another side as well.

8 exciting Reasons You Need To Book A Cruise

8 exciting Reasons You Need To Book A Cruise

Are you wondering if a cruise is for you?

In the beginning, I was unsure; my mind wondered ‘what if I’m seasick’ what if I do not like it, I’m unable to get off, and worried if we could fall off’ Eeek, Since having kids, I worry about these things; is this you? or just my crazy mind?

Once I stepped aboard I was at ease with the barriers on the ship= safety, but seasickness, well I’m not so lucky with all three cruises I have been nauseous; although I was not physically sick, I felt yuck, I took ginger tablets which helped, and generally by day two I was feeling better, my husband and kids have never felt sick.

In saying this, WE LOVE CRUISING; will we go on another cruise. Hell YES.

A cruise can be anything from relaxed to adventurous; the best part is, it is affordable, a cruise is a great holiday to unwind and relax by the pool, I was worried we may get bored, well definitely not, there is so much to do and a lot of food, my whole family had a blast, it was so much fun.

Would I recommend a cruise? YES, and these are eight reasons why.

  1. Affordable holiday (food, accommodation, entertainment, travel all in one)
  2. Great place to meet new people
  3. Everything in one place- relaxation and adventure
  4. You will not be bored
  5. Unlimited entertainment & activities = loads of fun.
  6. Unpack & pack only once
  7. Taste of luxury & friendly staff -food delicacies, service, pampered, and more.
  8. Explore multiple destinations

I have written this post with the love of cruising, we can’t wait to go on another cruise, we live in Melbourne Australia, and the three cruises have all been to the South Pacific islands, the information below is tailored to our  Carnival cruise experience and can differ from each cruise line.

A little tip: If you can travel off-season, peak seasons are extremely busy with school and summer holidaymakers, and the pool areas can become quite crowded and are more expensive.

Find a great deal now with Cruise Direct.

First steps for cruising

Getting to the cruise ship. The cruise line directly offers a shuttle to pick you up from the airport at a cost, this can be expensive we have chosen to get a taxi, so, if you are a family or in a group you may find it cheaper to order a taxi to take you to the port.

Are flying in from another city? I suggest to arrive the day before and stay overnight in accommodation if your budget allows; this avoids any unexpected delays in your flight, or if you choose to fly in on the day of your cruise arrive at least 4-5 hours earlier to allow time to get to the port.

The embarkation. The process is done in stages when you complete your booking you get to select a time you would like to embark onto the ship, we generally select the lunchtime allocation, this saves us some money not having to buy lunch and give us extra time to look around the ship before going up to the deck to sail away from the city views.

Make sure you take a backpack on board with your passport, cruise documents, swimsuit, and camera, as it can take a few hours until your luggage arrives at your room.

What to do first – on day one, explore; as tempting as it is, do not sit in your cabin and unpack, there is time for that later, and generally, your bag does not get to your room until later. Go for a walk, check out what the ship has to offer, take a look at the Spa it is always someone there to show you the spa area, for later you may want to unwind with a massage or treatment or use the gym.

On our last Carnival cruise, I treated myself to a 90-minute massage was true bliss I was in complete serenity, and I did not want to leave I left feeling so relaxed and smelling magnificent.

Exploring the whole ship is a must; you do not want to get to the last day and say, ‘I wish I did that’ or ‘Gee; I did not know they had that there is so much on offer from the pools, bars, shows, casino, golf/basketball, water slides, water park, kids club, range of dining areas familiarise yourself on the ship than when the activities are happening you know where to go there are always activities happening all day throughout the ship; it’s surprising how easy it is to lose your direction, or is that just me?

Things you need

Passport if traveling international, cruise documents, travel insurance, do your homework, depending on the country you are visiting, you may need a visa, the cruise line can help with all this information. Luggage tags, no one wants a lost bag.

Enough clothes to avoid paying fees for laundry services, but do not overpack the cabins have hairdryers that will save you space. What to pack for a cruise, check out my full list of ideas

Money: Many cruise companies have a sail and sign card; this avoids you having to carry cash on you while aboard the ship; you can choose to either link your credit card or deposit cash on the cruise card when you are aboard the cruise ship if you select using cash this is something you can do when you go aboard the first day at the service desk and the end of the cruise you if you have money left you can get this back, but who’s kidding, who will you have money left over? If you do, tell me your secret? Or if you are like me and you need more cash, you can find ATMs on the ship.

Tip: if using a credit card, check if there are any fees and what currency the ship uses.

Each day you get an itinerary for activities happening on the boat; you can also download the cruise app that provides you updates on what is happening on the ship during your cruise, keep in mind your cruise itinerary can change; this has happened to us due to weather we missed one island, a little heartbroken at the time, lucky there is plenty to keep us busy on the ship this does not occur often, it is a possibility the cruise ship will try to visit another port sometimes you may completely miss out on one port.

Cabins – Luxury or Budget, inside or balcony?

Are you traveling on a budget or have a bit of extra cash to splurge? let’s talk cabins there are a few different options: inside, porthole window, balcony, suites, and staterooms.

I love a good bargain and shop for holidays at a bargain price I have been fortunate to get a balcony every cruise at a great price; I love being able to go out on the balcony in the morning and see where you have arrived in the comfort of my pajamas, to watch the sunrise and sunset and to see how to dress depending on the weather and the beds are comfy.

Yes, it comes at a higher cost than the inside cabin or porthole window, and how much time do you intend to spend in your cabin.

Inside cabins can allow for more sleep as the rooms are dark; if your budget is tight and you like more spending money an inside or porthole cabin is the best option unless you can snag a great deal. Regardless of the cabin you choose, you get the same experience around the ship as everyone.

Each cabin has a small safe, be sure to place your valuables (wallet, passports, jewelry) inside before you venture around the ship.

If you are like me and tend to get a little seasick/ nauseous, try to get a cabin closest to the middle of the ship, you can still feel the ship’s movement with the waves but not as much as the front and rear of the cruise ship.

Food and more food

You will never go hungry; try out the different dining areas, restaurants, and buffet, from breakfast, lunch, and dinner and snacks throughout the day and night, you have endless options with the food included or the choice to pay extra, we only did the included to avoid paying extra, there are so many different eateries on board throughout the ship, walk around, explore and you will find places like a burger bar, pizza 24/7, sushi and so many more, you are in food heaven.

You will soon discover your favorite place to eat if you are a picky eater like our son is, no problems, there is something for everyone.

The buffet & restaurants have a large selection of food for all dietary requirements. My mother always said ‘buffet is like cattle at a trough’ I love a good buffet the first cruise I spent much of my time eating at the buffet, but the line up to get your meal can be very long, especially if you are helping your children get food.

On the second and third cruise, we chose to eat at the restaurant for dinner, live a little more luxury with fine dining and being served, and try your hand at eating some delicacies like frog legs, snails, kangaroo, quail, deer, and much more they have a kids menu too.

The first time we went to the restaurant; we left feeling hungry and followed it by tackling the line up at the buffet for more food.

The next night we returned to the restaurant and asked if we could order more than one entrée or/and main meal; to our surprise, the answer was yes.

Hot tip: do not be embarrassed to order more than one entrée or/and main, Miguel & I often ordered two entrées and two mains as the food was so yummy and it is not every day you get to try new delicious food like frog legs or snails in butter garlic sauce.

Endless eating aboard from dinner to the burgers at lunch, bacon and eggs, and all the different omelets for breakfast not to forget the endless soft-serve ice-cream machine by the pools. I find myself overindulging in food glory, I wonder if I will fit into my swimsuit?. EEK. I think I will take the stairs to burn some of those calories.

If you are celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or wedding, make sure you tell the wait staff to help you celebrate they bring great fun and joy to the dining experience, one you will not forget.

Cruise lines allocate dining times; that you can choose when setting up online or change it by going to the customer service desk, we choose anytime dining so we can eat at any time; this sometimes can have you seated in different areas if you like to sit on the same table with the same servers you may like to pick a dining time; don’t worry if your late you won’t go hungry, you will still be seated.

We were lucky with our anytime dining option that we most times got the same table and servers throughout our cruise.

Tip: Check the cruise line you are sailing with; some allow you to take BYO alcohol.

Are you a spender?

A cruise can be expensive or as budget, as you make it; between enjoying the luxuries of the spa or drinking all day; buying gifts, not to mention the internet package prices I found expensive.

If you like to dabble in some gambling in the casino or playing bingo, the cruise lines know how to make their money, if you can have some self-discipline enjoy your time with the onboard entertainment and activities offered throughout the day/night, most are included in the cruise.

Excursions: As luring as it is, avoid buying excursions on the cruise, they are expensive, and many places are safe to explore yourself. We cruised through the South Pacific; once onshore there are plenty of local tour companies/guides to offer you the same itinerary for a fraction of the price; some places have things you may want to buy on the cruise so, you do not miss out, due to limited tickets.

Have a look at the excursions desk to get an idea of what is on offer at the places you are visiting; there might be an excursion with a price you are happy to pay, but do your research first.

On the first cruise, I was advised to buy the excursions on the ship to avoid being left on the islands. I freaked out a little at that time; I could not afford the excursions through the cruise line. I am so glad I didn’t step off the boat to find many locals offering tours and cheap; be sure you are back before the cruise ship is due to leave, the cruise ship will not wait for you; on the cruises I have done, the tours have been great, and know to be back in advance.

Adults only: Need an escape from the kids or the noise aboard, but still be on the same ship; enjoy some serenity and feel the sea breeze head to the Adult only retreat where you will find a spa, pool, bar, and hammocks, and lounge chairs.

Need some more R&R, whether traveling solo, as a couple, or as a family when the kids are busy in the kids club, unwind in the spa, and indulge in a massage, facial, body wrap, and more.

Entertainment – each night enjoy entertainment for you and the family, from family comedy and adult comedy, trivia, bingo, game shows, musicals, shows with professional singers and dancers, and more.

Gym and spa – The fitness center is open every day from early morning; I am not much of a gym person tho I did try the gym a few times in the morning before breakfast. I must say I felt rejuvenated and energized to start the day; if you are more energetic than myself occasionally they do fitness classes.

What is your favorite drink? Cocktail, mocktail, spirits, wine, and beer; there are many bars around the ship to choose whether it be sitting by the pool being served in your seat or watching sports. I love to indulge in cocktails; my favorite is Toblerone or mudslide.

Fun for everyone

Pools, waterslides, and kids’ activities Not all cruise ships have water parks for the kids or waterslides, but there are always about two pools and spas to keep the whole family entertained.

Our last two cruises have been with Carnival Cruise lines I have to say Miguel and I have both enjoyed the slides as much as the kids; although they freak me out, it’s priceless seeing the joy on the kid’s face when we try to be somewhat adventurous.

Around the ship, you can find many activities like mini-golf, basketball, games room, and much more depending on the cruise line you choose; there is honestly something for everyone of any age.

Theme Nights. Each cruise line has theme nights an opportunity to get dressed up and have fun and be outrageous; check with the cruise line what their theme nights will be to pack accordingly, there are generally two-three different theme nights depending on the length of your cruise; they can: Elegant, 80’s, rock, Caribbean/Mexican nights.

Kids Club. We love this; by we, I mean hubby and me; if you’re feeling in need of some R&R, a cruise is definitely for you, and let’s be honest the kids love it too; they can spend so many hours in here.

Riley and Sophie woke every morning asking to go to the kids club; what a hit; there is an array of different activities from arts and craft, video/board games, movies, science, theme activities and so much more to keep them entertained.

The kids are safe and well looked after; you need to sign the kids in and out each time depending on the age of your child you can permit them to sign in and out; on occasions, the club does activities around the ship like a scavenger hunt that your child will need to be able to sign in and out themselves to be included.

The kids club close at mealtimes and need to collect your child at lunchtime, the club reopens in the afternoon, and the kids have the option to join the kids club for dinner in the buffet then they are taken to the kid’s rooms, Riley by the last few nights aboard decided to join the club for dinner each night; he loved it and made so many friends throughout the cruise.

If you like some time in the evening after 9 pm to go to a bar, a night club or the adult comedy, the club offers night sitting at a cost, I found the price relevant to being at home if you were to engage in the babysitting service.

Do you like to bet? Welcome to the onboard Casino – I enjoy playing the slot machines, and Miguel enjoys playing blackjack and roulette; on the last cruise, I learned how to play blackjack and roulette and highly enjoyed them.

If you have some restraint try your luck, you can use cash or insert your cruise card if you are using money be sure to insert your cruise card as you earn points or prizes, grab yourself a drink, sit back, and hope you win.

Shopping: there are many little shops around the ship; duty-free shops, jewelry, a lolly shop, clothes, knick-knacks, and more. After some cruise ship souvenirs check out the Duty-free shop and many other items, you may grab yourself a bargain, but remember when on land be sure to check their duty-free stores as they are sometimes cheaper.

Loyalty programs – We have sailed with Carnival on two occasions and P&O on one. If you get to be a frequent cruiser with the same cruise line, you can enjoy some perks with their loyalty programs like joining the Captain’s dinner party, free water bottles, free internet access, and other bonuses.

Before we disembark, let’s not forget to mention the amazing staff, the staff are so friendly and make your cruise vacation fun and one to remember, from the bar attendants, room attendant and especially the dining attendants, they make the whole experience so much fun and welcoming, it will be a holiday never to forget.

Disembarking is like the embarking process, it is done in phases; you will be allocated a time to disembark with your belongings.

Ultimate Travel Packing Guide In Best How To Steps

Ultimate Travel Packing Guide In Best How To Steps

Easy tips to get you packing with ease.

Packing can be stressful, do not wait until the last minute to pack your bags, start organizing, and use my packing list to mark things off as you decide what you’re taking. Depending on your type of trip you will need to tailor what you pack to your destination. (beach, hiking, adventurous, relaxed, winter/snow, summer, city break).

Try to avoid overpacking and paying excess luggage fees at the airport, or find it hard to lug your heavy bag around on a few occasions; I have had to put layers of clothes on just to avoid paying fees; so not overpacking is a big one too often we see people rummaging through their bags at the airport to avoid paying fees and can leave you feeling embarrassed, stressed and rushed to check-in, all before you have even left for your holiday.

Who wants to go on a holiday stressed and possibly fewer funds to spend on their trip? No one.

Remember what you may forget or leave behind you can always buy it at the destination you are going to; most places in Europe have pretty good and cheap markets, and Asia is low cost to get extras.

Most hotels provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash, some include toothbrush/toothpaste and have hairdryers to use, this can save you space in your luggage if staying in hotels and even some apartment rentals if you are not staying at these types of accommodation you can always buy them at a local store.

Depending on how long you are traveling; you can purchase smaller travel-sized toiletries; most of these are easy to refill to use again; you can get these from most shops or buy empty travel-size containers and fill them up before you leave.

Remember taking liquids as carry-on luggage there are regulations on how much you can take on a flight, but travel-sized containers are the way to go for carry-on.

The excitement of going on a holiday gets me packing in the week ahead; packing makes it feel more real that soon we will be leaving. I often put our things out on a space not used much (for us this is our spare bedroom), then I can triple check the items on my list and the item on the bed before I finally pack it into our suitcases.

It is surprising how much you may take away or add to this pile as the days go past. I generally pack clothes that I can mix with other outfits then I pack less and do not feel as though I am always wearing the same thing.

Packing lists and apps

You can use my packing list or other printable packing lists to help you mark off the items you have packed and write extra’s what I have not included.

You can also find packing apps you can download like: PackPoint, among other Apps, I prefer using paper and pen, but if you are more of a techy person these apps may work for you.

The same goes for your trip itineraries, carrying a paper copy or use apps like TripIt that can import your travel details such as hotel, flight, rental car, other reservations/confirmations, and more and an easy app to use.

Important to check with the airline what size bag you can take on board, carry-on, and checked luggage; it can vary between airlines, you do not want to be stuck with the costly fees for oversized bags.

Ensure you pack your valuables in your carry-on bag like; passport, ID, wallet (cash & cards), boarding pass, travel documents (hotel/car bookings), camera, laptop, phone, prescription glasses, and so on.

I pack a change of clothes in my carry-on in case I or my kids spill a drink or my luggage gets held up or lost; this goes for packing for younger kids they generally tend to need a change of clothes, and a packet of baby wipes is handy to carry to help clean that unexpected mess.

Packing Tip: To save space put your smaller items into your shoes (like socks, gloves, things that can roll up). Place your toiletries that can leak into a plastic bag/ Ziplock bag.

7 Beautiful Islands You Must See In The South Pacific

7 Beautiful Islands You Must See In The South Pacific

Cruising your way through the paradise of the South Pacific islands.

Cruising the South Pacific islands is like a dream, no long drives, no being couped up in a car, bus, or train. Lay back soaking up the sun all while sipping on a cocktail taking in the gorgeous scenery and pristine beaches. We have cruised with P&O and Carnival Cruise and can recommend both there is fun for the whole family, Carnival is our preferred cruise and number one choice for the kids, the water park, slides and kids club were a huge hit, for mum and dad too.

Plunge into the sparkling clear water, admire the colourful marine life, and walk along the stunning white sands. Take in the breathtaking views as you discover the serene tropical Paradise Islands like Port Vila, Mystery Island, Isle of Pines, Lifou, and much more.

We set sail from Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, with the sea breeze in our hair, enjoying the magic aboard our cruise ship while indulging in a mudslide cocktail, with excitement setting in as we prepare to explore seven Dream destinations that will leave you with memories to last a life time.

Isle of Pines (New Caledonia)

New Caledonia is the French-Pacific region well-known for its relaxed culture, tropical climate, turquoise water, untouched beaches, and coral reefs.

A pacific jewel, relax, dive in and snorkel around the Taboo rock admiring the reef and colorful fish, enjoy the island food, get your hair braided, pick up some souvenirs at Kanumera Bay and Kuto bay all a short walk from where you disembark onto the shores from the cruise ship tender boats, and experience the Isle adventure by taking a tour to many of the wonders of the island.

Vao Village and Notre-Dame de L’Assomption – Vao is in the south and is the official administrative centre of the island, there is also the police station and a couple of small shops, in the centre of the village you will find the church built in 1860- Notre-Dame de L’Assomption the only convict-built catholic church, inside you will uncover eye-catching stained-glass windows and an arrangement of saints. Adjacent to the church you will find the house of the Chief.

St Maurice Bay with tribal carved totems – The statue of Saint Maurice is encircled with tribal carved totems, the wooden carved totems represent various animals and birds, each given by the different tribes on the islands. The statue commemorates the first catholic service given in 1848, three days after two missionaries arrived at the Isle of Pines. In the background, there are more totems that line the beach forming a fence. If you have a look closely, you will see the totems all have different expressions. Around the totems we found many large snails, I am unsure if these snails are in fact one of the island’s delicacies ‘Bulimes or Escargots de l’Île des pins’ (snails)?

St Joseph Bay & traditional pirogues– In French pirogues refer to handcrafted banana-shaped boats, In Madagascar, they are called Lakana outrigger canoe, we found this pirogue in the pristine waters of St Joseph’s Bay, the pirogue is available to hire if you’re up for some sailing.

Penal colony ruins – Part of the Island’s history, the ruins of the old prison where nearly 30,000 French convicts were taken in the 19th century still stand although falling apart, step back in history and the deprivations the convicts will have endured. Just down from the ruins, you will find The convict cemetery, which is still maintained, a place of memory and worth a visit, around 200 Paris deportees’ unidentified graves from the ‘Commune of Paris’ are buried here, a reminder of how many people lost their lives.

The Oumagne Grotto (cave of Queen Hortense) is in the north of Kunié (Isle of Pines), many caves fill the island, but Queen Hortense’s cave is most well-known as the one belonging to the ‘Queen’ in the Touété area.

The Oumagne Grotto became known for its legend, 16-year-old Hortense took refuge within the cave to escape the conflict between the tribes, it is said that Hortense spent a few months in the cave, but there are different stories to this legend, it is a magical place to visit and easy to get to with a tour, and a short walk to the cave from the car park, you will be met with a freshwater stream, beautiful tropical setting with vibrant flowers and lush green ferns and find the flagstone which would have been the young queen’s bed, this cave will leave you feeling pure tranquillity.

6 sights to see on the Isle of Pines:

  1. Kuto Bay and Kanumera Bay
  2. Vao Village and Notre-Dame de L’Assomption
  3. St Maurice Bay with carved tribal totems
  4. St Joseph Bay with traditional pirogues
  5. Penal colony ruins
  6. The Oumagne Grotto (cave of Queen Hortense)

Noumea, New Caledonia

Stepping off the cruise in port, you will be taken by bus to the main terminal in the city, Noumea is the capital city of New Caledonia, where the official language is French.

There is plenty to keep you busy around the city of Noumea depending on your style of travel, do you want to relax at the beach or explore the sights of the city, or both? On our first and third trip, we explored the city, on our second trip we enjoyed some snorkeling.

Noumea is not really a pretty city, if you are lucky to catch the large market in coconut Palm square, you can enjoy some great shopping, or the hop-on-hop-off bus is the best option to see some sights and viewpoints around the island or go for a swim at Lemon Bay.

It is a great place to use to get to other surrounding islands, we took a 5-minute taxi boat from Anse Vata across to Duck Island and spent the afternoon swimming and snorkeling, we saw so many different colorful fish, Duck Island has many sculptures to view, walk along the spiritual artistic trail, you can have lunch at the restaurant and hire a sunbed on the island, the taxi was free for kids 5 and under and approx. $16aus per adult.

Heading back to the main terminal where you began, you will find some local markets at the terminal where the bus will pick you up to return you to the ship, here is a good place to buy some souvenirs and even use their free WI-FI.

Lifou, New Caledonia

Be transported on a tender boat to the jetty and step on the white sands and crystal-clear waters, close by you will find the market, with handmade crafts, artwork, and souvenirs, get your hair braided or relax with a massage, try some local specialty, authentic Melanesian  ‘bougna’ chicken or seafood with local vegetables cooked in banana leaves while chatting with the locals you will also find some toilets here.

Easo beach is direct as you step off the jetty, it is not perfect for snorkeling as there is no reef, but you may be lucky to see some colorful fish and if your swimming near the jetty you are likely to get a glimpse of a turtle or two, I recommend using reef shoes here as there is a lot of coral rocks and can really hurt your feet, there is plenty of space along Easo beach for everyone off the ship and the shoreline has many tree’s for shade to relax under, you can easily spend your day here.

Notre Dame de Lourdes, walk through the markets and walk the main road if you are up for a little hike, trek your way up the hill, wear fitted shoes/sandals as the path is quite rocky, and you will walk past some tribal totems and pass some village houses, continue your hike, you will be met with some stairs that will lead you up until you reach the small church and incredible views. The views were worth the walk.

Take a short walk (10-minute) to Jinek Bay, where you will discover breathtaking coral and marine life, with such disappointment we missed out on snorkeling this pristine reef as we didn’t have a ticket, so don’t do what we did.

Tip: Buy a ticket, numbers are limited so buy your ticket on the ship for around $15.00AUD, the passes have a time restriction of 3.5 hours, plenty of time in my opinion to be snorkeling, reef shoes are not to be worn in Jinek Bay this is to ensure the preservation of the reef. Best reef to see some amazing coral and exotic sea life. So, we heard. Next time I will be sure to buy our tickets.

The Forest walk and Secret Grotto, surrounded by tropical rainforest, enjoy a guided nature walk to the secret grotto (caves) learn about the Kanak culture, learn about the medicine that comes from their trees and plants, and see a demonstration of traditional hunting methods, a way the people survive using only the supplies they have on hand and listen to the history, discover the deep and winding grotto by flashlight, you will uncover fossilized coral and impressive stalactites.

Tip:  If taking pictures be sure to use your flash, I forgot to use my flash and have only black pictures. The walk is quite steep and rocky so can be a little complex, take a little swim too in the grotto.

5 things to do in Lifou.

  1. Jinek Bay (Best snorkeling)
  2. The forest walk & secret grotto
  3. Hike up to Notre Dame de Lourdes
  4. Relax on Easo Beach
  5. Check out the local market and chat with the locals
Stunning Lifou

Port Vila, Vanuatu

Step directly onto land, into the vibrant capital city of Vanuatu, friendly locals will greet you ‘hello’ as you step ashore into ‘island time’, making you feel right at home if you would like a destination stamp on your passport (not official of course) you can get one here for about $1.00AUD.

Try some traditional food and taste the Island’s drink ‘Kava’ (if you dare), Kava is a symbol of Vanuatu’s custom and identity. It uses traditional techniques, like chewing, pounding, grinding, and grating, it is made from the crushed roots of a plant from the pepper family, Kava has a mild intoxicating/ sedative effect. Kava is traditionally used as a drink for ceremonies and cultural practices.

Enjoy a drink or bite to eat in one of the many beachside cafes with amazing views, do some duty-free shopping and explore the markets.

Tip: I found the duty-free shop here in Port vila to be the cheapest.

Stop at the few different scenic lookouts for a photo and see some historical sights and discover the amazing views over the harbor and city.

Visit the Eton Village and Eton Primary School and experience how the Islanders live and have an appreciation for their lifestyle and culture, makes you think the small things in life are often bigger than the great things, with so much happiness on their faces and bare feet on the ground, you fully appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

I have a few things on my ‘to do list’ for my next South Pacific cruise to Port Vila, Port Vila has some amazing unspoiled natural water holes to visit like; the Mele cascading waterfall to see the impressive waterfall flowing into the natural pools and dive in for a swim and to visit the breathtaking Lololima Cascades that is located on private property off the beaten track, another is the Blue Lagoon, to escape the tropical heat and immerse yourself into the freshwater springs surrounded by rainforest.

vanuatu

Mystery Island, Vanuatu

You will arrive at Mystery island by a tender boat and be welcomed with a traditional dance ceremony, an island of wonder, the island is unpopulated, and only cruise ships bring tourists, the locals from neighboring islands journey over to Mystery island to set up markets to sell locally made crafts, you can refresh with a coconut and chat with the locals.

The kids can get a photo with the ‘cannibal soup pot’ the island is small in size and easy to explore, you can choose to do a tour on a glass-bottom boat to snorkeling hot spots or simply Swim in the crystal clear waters, sun-bath on the white sandy beach and soak up the majestic setting, seeing is believing, a slice of paradise.

Suva, Fiji

Is the heart of Fiji and the largest city in the South Pacific, downtown is quite diverse with buildings and culture, you will find some colonial buildings, modern shopping centers, many small local stores, and an abundance of eateries, along the esplanade there are markets where you can find some local handmade crafts, we bought a beautiful wooden carved bowl and a Fijian war club we have on display at our home.

We opted to do a tour for half the day and then return to Suva city to look around the shops. Along our tour we visited the Navatuvula Village we got the true ‘Bula’ welcome from the locals of the village with cultural dance, followed by a tour of the village and a taste of some locally authentic cooked Fijian food, they have a little market in the village to buy some handmade crafts, here I bought some hand weaved cooking mats that I use all the time.

After the village we went to the Upper Pool waterfalls at Colo-I-Suva Forest Park, where you can trek through the lush and peaceful rainforest, nice hike to spot some beautiful birdlife then arrive at the natural clear water swimming hole, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a swing on the ‘Tarzan’ rope and dive into the waters below, fun for kids and the adults. You will find the Upper Pool waterfalls at Colo-I-Suva Forest Park about a 10-minutes drive from Suva.

While you are in Suva you can take a scenic tour to view some historical sites, visit the Old Parliament House and the Battery Gun Site at Nasonini, now titled a WWII Heritage site, stop at the Fiji Museum, and see the University of the South Pacific and visit Fiji’s first sugar and rice mill, built-in 1872.

village dance

Port Denarau, Fiji

Located on the west coast of Fiji’s mainland, a short 20-minute drive from Nadi. Port Denarau is a place for retail fans, with many shops to spend some time exploring, including Duty-free shops with a large range of international brands and products, as well as traditional handicrafts and souvenirs, all moderately priced, along the marina there are many restaurants and cafes (Hard Rock Café being one of them) to sit and enjoy a meal and soak up the atmosphere, in the afternoon if your lucky you can catch fire and cultural dance for free.

There are many locals offering land and sea tours, you can jump on a shuttle bus to look at all the local resorts, for the golf enthusiast there is quite a large golf course here, we did a tour to one of the many resorts and spent the day on the beach, on the way we stopped at a supermarket to grab some snacks and drinks and spent the day swimming, the kids can enjoy a pony ride for a small fee. Big hit for the kids.
